Questions about going local

Straight answers, no vague marketing-speak.

Local SEO is the practice of optimising your online presence so your business appears when nearby customers search for what you offer; in Google’s map pack, in regular organic results with local intent, and on Google Maps itself. It combines on-page work (your website’s content and structure), off-page work (citations, backlinks, and reviews), and direct management of your Google Business Profile, which functions almost like a second website in how much ranking weight it carries.

You’ll typically see initial movement — improved Google Business Profile visibility, new citations indexing, early ranking shifts — within 4 to 8 weeks. Meaningful map pack rankings for competitive terms usually build over 3 to 6 months as review volume, citation authority, and content relevance accumulate. Local SEO compounds: a business actively investing for 12 months holds a significant advantage over one that started 3 months ago, which is why consistency matters more than intensity.

It’s often the single best-suited channel for small businesses. Local SEO targets people who are already searching with intent to buy nearby;  a fundamentally warmer audience than broad brand advertising. It typically delivers a lower cost per lead than paid search once rankings are established, and a well-optimised Google Business Profile can compete credibly against far larger competitors in a defined local area, levelling a field that national SEO never could.

Regular SEO competes for visibility nationally or globally and largely ignores location. Local SEO adds an entirely separate ranking system — the map pack — governed by different signals: Google Business Profile completeness, citation consistency, proximity, and review volume matter far more than they do in standard organic SEO. A site can rank well organically and still be invisible in local search if these location-specific signals are missing, which is why local SEO requires its own dedicated strategy rather than being treated as a subset of general SEO.
